Educational Autism

Autism is a developmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interaction and communication, and by restricted and repetitive behavior.

Autism, as defined by Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), refers to;

  • “a developmental disability significantly affecting verbal and nonverbal communication and social interaction, generally evident before age three, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance.”

  • “Other characteristics often associated with autism are engaging in repetitive activities and stereotyped movements, resistance to environmental change or change in daily routines, and unusual responses to sensory experiences."

I use comprehensive diagnostic instruments to provide an educational identification of Autism for parents and schools.  Assessments measure the presence of atypical behaviors and the absence of typical behaviors associated with autism such as social- communication issues and stereotyped behaviors.  I also focus on identifying personal strengths and interests to improve academic and social outcomes.

If your child exhibits these characteristics, schedule a consultation to discuss how I can support you in this journey! Or if you are a district struggling to find the resources to support high-needs students, consult with me today!
